A Mountain of Japanese Animation News Landed Over the Festive Season

The winter break provide a multitude of pastimes considerably more enjoyable than catching up on the headlines: discovering surprises, indulging in delicious food, and using deep breathing to avoid snapping at family members. I hope you succeeded in do all these things and more. That said, the world of entertainment never sleeps, and this is especially true for the realm of anime. Many thrilling announcements emerged over the break, and just in case you overlooked some of them, here is a compilation of the most exciting bits.

The One-Punch Man Series Its Third Season Is Set to Continue (In 2027)

Without a doubt the biggest revelation, the notorious disaster that was season 3 of One-Punch Man proved insufficient to stop the series' continuation. The show will return with a follow-up batch of episodes in 2027—such a distant date they might as well have called it season 4. Even more shocking, the studio J.C. Staff will still be at the helm. Thankfully this time, director Shinpei Nagai is set to direct from the outset, which is seen as a hopeful indicator. But, the promotional image for the continuation is identical to the one used for season 3, just with characters Saitama and Garou looking opposite ways. This suggests that, at this point, they could be trolling the fans.

The Ruri Dragon Series Is Set to Be the Premiere Shonen Jump Anime Produced By Kyoto Animation

Kyoto Animation has built a reputation for being an elite animation studio, setting itself apart not just for the high caliber of its work but for the ethical practices of its employees—a uncommon practice in the industry. Curiously, until now, it had never worked on an anime adapted from a manga serialized in Shonen Jump, arguably the most iconic magazine in the industry. Ruri Dragon will break that tradition, and what a excellent choice it is. The manga by Masaoki Shindo achieved massive popularity when it launched in 2022 after just a small number of issues, but then went into a lengthy break due to the mangaka's health issues. When it resumed publication with a more relaxed pace, the series showed it still retained the fans' support and goodwill, and now everyone is ecstatic about the forthcoming KyoAni adaptation.

The Kingdom Series Its Sixth Season Is Getting a Follow-Up Currently in Production

Kingdom is the best-selling, long-running Shueisha manga that is other than One Piece. If you've never heard of it before, it's because it only recently got an English translation, but the anime has been airing for a while, and its sixth season was a further stellar entry. As it happens that was just the first half, because a "sequel" has been confirmed as in development, and it will probably air in 2026.

Science Saru Will Adapt A Witch in Mongolia Into an Anime Series

A further studio known for the excellent quality of its productions, Science Saru has given us critically acclaimed works of the caliber of Space Dandy, Devilman Crybaby, and, lastly, Dandadan. This time, the studio will be producing the adaptation of Tomato Soup's manga A Witch's Life in Mongol, based on the actual historical person of Fatima, an influential woman and intellectual in the Mongol Empire in the 13th century. Based on the trailer, the anime called Jaadugar: A Witch in Mongolia will have a highly unique and fascinating visual style, which is somewhat reminiscent of Ranking of Kings. Scheduled to launch in July 2026, this one will absolutely be on my list of anticipated shows.

The Tougen Anki Series Is Set to Continue With a Season Two

Immediately following the conclusion of episode 24, it was announced that Tougen Anki will be securing a follow-up. Inspired by the Japanese legend of Momotaro, Tougen Anki adapts the manga by Yura Urushibara. The upcoming season of the anime will delve into the Nikko Kegon Falls Arc, but a concrete air date has yet to be revealed.
