A substantial Pacific bluefin tuna created waves at the Tokyo's Toyosu fish market this Monday, garnering a record-breaking bid of 510.3 million yen (3.2 million US dollars; £2.4m) during the market's inaugural auction of the calendar year.

The successful offer for the 243kg fish came from the operator of a popular sushi chain, which runs locations throughout Japan and overseas.

"The year's tuna signals fortune," remarked the business owner, a regular participant at the traditional January sale.

Dubbed the Tuna King, this entrepreneur is noted for making record bids for bluefin tuna at these high-profile new year auctions.

Auction Surprise and Record-Setting Past

Following the auction, the successful bidder informed reporters that he was "taken aback at the amount," noting, "I expected we would be able to purchase it a little cheaper, but the price soared rapidly."

This new purchase surpasses his previous notable purchases:

  • He secured a tuna for 56.5 million yen away in 2012.
  • He paid 155 million yen in 2013.
  • In 2019, he won a tuna for 333.6 million yen ($2.1 million).

Even after previously commenting that he thought he "overdid it," he has now proceeded to shatter his personal record yet again.

An Annual Spectacle of Exorbitant Bids

The inaugural auction at the Tokyo fish market is traditionally associated with exceptionally high prices. Last year, the initial tuna was bought for 207 million yen by another culinary group, which indicated the fish would be featured at its locations across Japan.

The frenetic atmosphere at the fish market during these early morning auctions has become a must-see spectacle in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which began around 05:00 local time, was no different.

Immediate Consumption

The record-priced tuna was quickly processed for patrons at the bidder's sushi chains shortly after the auction was finished.

"I feel like I've commenced the year in a positive way after eating something so fortune-bringing as the year starts," said one satisfied patron.
