Chicago's MLB Team Secure Star Hitter Munetaka Murakami on a Substantial Two-Year Deal.

In a significant move for their retooling roster, the South Side team have signed Japanese star Munetaka Murakami, finalizing a lucrative contract with the high-profile player.

Financial Terms and Player Perks

The agreement includes a seven-figure signing bonus, issued within 30 days, alongside annual pay of $16 million for the next season and seventeen million for the following year.

Notably, Murakami's compensation is subject to escalators based on performance achievements in 2026:

  • A seven-figure bonus for winning the MVP award.
  • $500,000 for finishing as runner-up or in third place in MVP voting.
  • $250K for placing fourth through 10th.
  • Another $250,000 for earning the ROY honor.

The agreement provides that he will not be optioned to the minor leagues without his approval and allows him to become a unrestricted player at the termination of the contract. Additional perks include a club-supplied interpreter and flight reimbursement between his home country and the States.

Posting Fee and Team Legacy

As part of the signing, Chicago owes a transfer fee of $6,575,000 to the Tokyo Yakult Swallows, Murakami's previous team in Japan's professional league. The Swallows would also receive a supplemental fee of any triggered performance bonuses.

Murakami joins the ranks as the fourth-ever Japanese-born to suit up for the South Siders, in the footsteps of reliever Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), second baseman Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and fielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Interestingly, Takatsu previously coached Murakami during their time in Japan.

Player Profile

Murakami, a left-handed hitter who will turn 26 on February 2nd, enters a emerging group of offensive players in Chicago that contains prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The team are coming off a 60-102 season, placing at the bottom in the division but representing a significant improvement from the year before campaign.

The winner of back-to-back Central League MVP honors in '21 and '22, Murakami is renowned for a monumental 2022 season where he hit 56 HRs, eclipsing the all-time record for a NPB hitter previously held by legend Sadaharu Oh. That feat also made him the youngest player ever to secure Japan's coveted batting Triple Crown.

His 2023 season was limited to a partial schedule due to an muscle issue. Even with striking out 64 times, he hit .273 with 22 HRs and 47 driven in.

Over his eight-year tenure with the Yakult club, Murakami has accumulated a .270 batting average with 246 homers, 647 RBI, and nearly 1,000 strikeouts in nearly 900 games. Early in his career playing mostly at first base, he has more recently played to third.

Global Stage Success

Murakami's clutch hitting were on center stage during the last World Baseball Classic. In the penultimate game against Mexico, he delivered a game-ending two-base hit that brought home two fellow Japanese stars for a thrilling one-run win. The following day in the championship game against the United States, he slugged a game-tying homer in the second inning, setting the stage for Japan's subsequent title triumph.

The new White Sox addition is scheduled to be officially presented at a press conference on the coming Monday.
