Eric Adams to Endorse Former Governor Andrew Cuomo in New York City Mayor's Election

NYC's current mayor Mayor Adams revealed his decision to support Andrew Cuomo in the upcoming mayoral race, despite an extended period of disagreements between the pair of Democrats.

A Surprising Reversal After Previous Accusations

Only weeks ago, Adams had strongly criticized Cuomo, calling him a “deceptive figure and a untruthful person” and alleging of having “a career of pushing Black candidates out of races.” However, in a new development, Mayor Adams changed his position, revealing he now plans to support Cuomo in areas where he maintains significant backing.

“It is crucial to really wake up the communities of color that have been affected by urban displacement on how critical this election is,” Adams remarked.

He added, “Residents have seen their housing costs rise due to gentrification and they have been disregarded in those neighborhoods, and I plan to visit to those neighborhoods and speak one on one with community leaders and organizations and I will appear with the former governor in those neighborhoods and get them involved.”

Election Landscape and Recent Events

The mayoral contest has so far been shaped by the struggle between the former governor and democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani, whose growing support has drawn interest globally and symbolized aspirations for a revitalized progressive wing of the Democratic party.

During a latest mayoral debate, both Mamdani and Republican nominee his conservative opponent declared they would refuse Adams’s endorsement if extended.

Earlier this year, Adams had begun his re-election campaign as an unaffiliated candidate after facing federal corruption charges which were later dismissed in return for his assistance with government enforcement actions across the city.

During a unrelated press conference on Thursday, Adams responded to journalists asking about the support announcement by saying, “I'm meeting Andrew this evening.”

The announcement followed a day after Adams and Cuomo were spotted attending a game side-by-side at the the NBA team's first game at Madison Square Garden, which occurred right after a contentious mayoral debate.
