‘Every minor detail – execute them’: Guruzeta’s journey from gurney to success with the Basque club

Whenhe initial occasion the Athletic striker featured in English soil, an 18-year-old playing for the reserve team against Borussia Mönchengladbach Under-23s at the English ground in fall 2015, he found the net. During his subsequent match he took the field in the country, against Sunderland two months later, he netted. Another occasion, against the Citizens six weeks after that, well, he repeated the feat. Upon his comeback to the city to take on Manchester United at Leigh’s ground in the 2017 season, he found the back of the net. It was a superb volley, also. “Actually,” he states, “it’s one of the best goals I’ve netted.” So Athletic did what they had to do: they substituted him.

“I was furious,” the Athletic striker says, then chuckling. “I’m sure there’s footage. Our match against United and I was in fine form. They didn’t let me play the second half: my contract wasn’t finalized deal, I kept finding the net, there were lots of rumours, as you’d expect. I’m unsure regarding the Magpies’ pursuit, but I remember reading about Man United, standard transfer gossip. It’s unclear if it was accurate, but even if they had called, my desire was to remain at the club. I’m fortunate to be here.”

Real Sociedad ease tension with bizarre win in unique Basque clash

At Lezama, the city, the early training is about to start; following that, the quick travel to Loiu airport and another trip to the UK, on this occasion to take on the Magpies in the UCL on midweek. Uttering the name lights him up. It’s turning out to be a tough year for the team, partly because of the requirements of their participation. Losing in stoppage time in the weekend clash, they have won only one of their last eight matches and fallen to the Gunners and Borussia Dortmund in European competition. Yet, take in the big picture, the major occasions he’s experienced and future challenges, and he feels a calm gratitude from him.

In the the period since he had come back to Athletic, Guruzeta has been a Europa League semi-finalist, denied at the last hurdle a domestic final by the English giants, and has ridden an historic vessel along the Nervión river accompanied by a huge crowd after winning the Copa del Rey, the club’s first trophy in a long wait. Now he is the club’s leading marksman in the European competition, where they are countercultural and returning after absence in ten years. “This was beyond my dreams,” he admits.

Guruzeta thought it difficult enough just to break into the senior squad and he was right. The son of the one-time rival player Xabi Guruzeta and a dedicated fan at the club that are now his rivals, the forward is a graduate of Antiguoko, the local academy that developed the Arsenal manager, the legendary midfielder and Andoni Iraola. He joined Athletic at seventeen but after his top-level debut in that summer, he suffered a serious knee problem, being released, a demotion and a return before he could earn his place, coming back aged 26 to enjoy the highlights of the club’s history.

Gorka Guruzeta in training
Gorka Guruzeta aims to take on Newcastle in the Champions League.

“Entering the youth system not expecting to reach the senior squad but each step you advance through you’re remaining and you can see it getting closer. You make it and … you’re sent away.” He had limited game time in a handful of matches between his debut and February 2019. “Subsequently I returned to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. A few matches with them and my knee gave way.

“It was a huge blow but In retrospect as a turning point because it made me change the perspective. Healing from a serious ailment is difficult, but it’s beneficial. You adopt practices new to you. Previously I was casual, but I would go to training and then return home, typical youth behavior. At the complex, facilities are comprehensive, so take full advantage. Training, prehab. Hit the weights. If your hips aren’t balanced, work on that. If your ankles are a 10, improve it more. All those ‘silly things’: execute them.

“Among professionals you’re going to collide with opponents who have been in battles countless occasions. Highly robust. I look at photos of me before: my physique was slight. Thus incidents occur. Current photos and the improvement is clear. The setback taught me. Training finishes, but additional work remains. Everyone else is ready, really ready; no exceptions.”

You also have to play. He left in tears in the pandemic season, aged 23, moving to a lower level. During his Sabadell spell in that season, he netted three goals in numerous matches. During his Amorebieta stint in the latter part of the season, the goals started to flow. “Many experience this: transfers, releases. Should you reverse it, effort, faith, and if one day they need someone in your position, they might come back for you. Preparation is key. Upon the recall, an aspiration fulfilled. Lifting the cup, play in Europe, and reach the Champions League … pfff.”

No wonder he says savor the moment. Especially after the prior campaign which, sometimes, was about endurance. After being leading scorer with sixteen goals, his output dropped to seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
