At least 64 people were killed in a security raid targeting the organized crime group in Rio de Janeiro's northern suburbs - the most extensive and fatal action in the Brazilian state's past.

Four law enforcement personnel lost their lives during the security mission in the communities of Alemão and Penha, local authorities reported. More than 80 people were detained.

Violent conflicts broke out when approximately 2,500 security personnel entered the area on Tuesday morning. The criminal organization countered with armed resistance, burning barricades and dropping bombs from drones, authorities said.

The UN Human Rights Office said it was "appalled" by the police operation, urging "immediate and thorough inquiries".

Mission Consequences

The area of favelas close to Rio's airport is considered to be the headquarters of a major criminal organizations.

Government representatives stated at least 50 of the fatalities were "indicated by police as suspected of being criminals".

Many residents were hurt, including civilians caught in the crossfire.

Locals have compared the mountainous region - home to about 300,000 individuals - to a "combat area" since the mission commenced.

The Red Command group has been increasing their influence in the area, expanding narcotics distribution networks and dominance over the slum communities.

Security forces stated over 200kg (441lb) of drugs were seized in the operation, along with multiple guns.

The coordinated mission by civil and military police comes after a twelve-month inquiry.

Numerous alleged criminals are believed to be affiliates of a group from the northern region who are at the moment taking refuge in the metropolitan area.
