Figures from both sides of the partisan divide and the entertainment industry are coming together to condemn Donald Trump for his remarks following the shocking passing of renowned filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.

A Controversial Social Media Post

After the couple were found deceased at their Los Angeles residence, Trump took to his platform to label the deceased director as "anguished and struggling". The post, he claimed Reiner's demise was "because of the hostility he caused others through his enormous, relentless, and incurable affliction with a mind-crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".

His comments quickly shifted to praising his own achievements, juxtaposing Reiner's supposed "raging obsession" and "clear paranoia" with what Trump described as the "Golden Age of America".

Police Developments and Detention

Police have since confirmed the detention of the couple's 32-year-old son, Nick, on suspicion of murder in relation to the case. Reports indicate his bail was set at a significant sum.

A Wave of Condemnation from Public Figures

The reaction to Trump's post was immediate and harsh.

“What a disgusting and despicable comment,” remarked actor Patrick Schwarzenegger.

Media personality Whoopi Goldberg, who described Reiner a close acquaintance, also condemned the statements. Goldberg pointed to previous comments from Trump about the killing of an activist, demanding, "Do you have no decency? Can you get any lower?"

The state of California's Governor, Gavin Newsom, succinctly wrote, "He is a sick man."

Echoing this view, US House member Maxwell Alejandro Frost declared, "He is a contemptible piece of trash."

Senator Chris Murphy commented, "He's just lost it. Now saying the Reiners brought on their own demise because they opposed him. So sick."

Criticism from His Own Party

Some GOP lawmakers also expressed dismay.

Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene emphasized that the situation was "a personal tragedy, not about political feuds or political enemies". Greene also mentioned struggles with addiction and mental health within families.

Another Republican congressman, Thomas Massie, labeled Trump's remarks "inappropriate and disrespectful" considering the circumstances. He publicly dared others in his party to justify the comments.

The Director's Legacy and Stance on Trump

Rob Reiner was consistently a outspoken critic of Donald Trump. During a previous conversation, he stated Trump was "mentally unfit" for the presidency. He had also cautioned about the risks of autocracy should Trump be reelected to power.

"We see authoritarianism on the rise around the world," Reiner said. "If we fall, there’s a risk that democratic systems collapse around the world."

Despite his pointed criticisms, Reiner had in the past shown "complete revulsion" and condemned violence for political ends without reservation after the killing of another individual.

Adding a layer of past connection, Michele Reiner, formerly Michele Singer, was the photographer who captured the photograph for Donald Trump's 1987 book, The Art of the Deal.

Rob Reiner had previously shared the story of the photo shoot, mentioning Trump's demand for "a specific hair product" as posing on a high-rise with a view of Central Park.
