Report Reveals Synthetic Compounds in Food Supply Generating a Public Health Burden of $2.2tn Each Year

Experts have sounded an urgent alarm, stating that numerous artificial chemicals supporting modern farming are driving rising rates of malignancies, brain development disorders, and infertility, while simultaneously undermining the core pillars of global agriculture.

The yearly financial toll linked to contact with compounds like plasticizers, bisphenols, pesticides, and Pfas is reckoned to be around $2.2 trillion—a staggering sum roughly equal to the aggregate income of the world's 100 largest listed corporations, according to a new analysis.

Furthermore, most ecological harm remains unpriced. However even a limited accounting of environmental effects—considering agricultural declines and the cost of complying with drinking water standards for such chemicals—indicates an further cost of $640 billion. The study also cautions of serious demographic implications, finding that if current rates of contact to hormone-altering chemicals remain, there could be from 200 million and 700 million fewer births worldwide between 2025 and 2100.

An Urgent "Alert" from Health Professionals

A key author on the report, a renowned paediatrician and academic of public health, described the results a "blunt wake-up call".

"Society really has to wake up and do something about the issue of synthetic chemicals," he stated. "In my view that the issue of chemical pollution is equally critical as the issue of climate change."

The expert pointed out a alarming shift in pediatric diseases over his lengthy career. While illnesses from infectious agents have declined, there has been an "dramatic increase" in non-communicable diseases, with growing contact to hundreds of manufactured chemicals being a "very important cause."

The Ubiquitous Substances in the Food Chain

The report specifically assesses the influence of four groups of artificial chemicals endemic in global agriculture:

• Plasticizers and Bisphenols: Frequently used as plastic agents, they are found in containers and disposable gloves used in handling.
• Agrochemicals: They support industrial agriculture, with vast monoculture farms spraying enormous quantities on crops to kill pests, and numerous produce being treated post-harvest to maintain shelf life.
• Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances: Used in non-stick paper, popcorn tubs, and cartons, these persistent chemicals have accumulated in the environment to the point of entering the food chain through pollution.

All of these substances have been linked to significant harms, including hormonal disruption, various types of cancer, birth defects, cognitive disability, and weight gain.

A Largely Unchecked Issue with Hidden Risks

Human and environmental exposure to synthetic chemicals has surged since the mid-20th century, with global chemical production growing over 200-fold. Currently, there are more than 350,000 synthetic chemicals on the global market.

Alarmingly, unlike medicines, there are scant testing requirements to verify the long-term effects of commercial chemicals prior to they are released onto widespread use, and inadequate monitoring of their effects afterward. Some have subsequently been found to be highly harmful to humans, animals, and the environment.

The lead expert expressed special worry about chemicals that harm children's brains and endocrine-disrupting compounds. The researcher emphasized that the chemicals analyzed in the report are "only the tip of the iceberg," representing a tiny number of substances for which solid safety data exists.

"The thing that alarms me the most is the thousands of chemicals to which we're all subjected every day about which we know virtually nothing," he admitted. "Until one of them causes something blatantly obvious, like children to be born with severe deformities, we're going to go on unthinkingly subjecting ourselves."

The report ultimately presents a sobering picture of a hidden crisis within the global food system, calling for immediate measures and reform to address this multi-trillion-dollar ecological and public health burden.
