The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Shares He Knows How The Apple TV+ Show Will Conclude... For Now.
The acclaimed writer-producer could not have predicted that his new science-fiction series would turn into a cultural phenomenon. “The viewers have been incredible,” he states. “I was surprised by the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”
As the debut season of the hit program coming to an end—and Season 2 already in development—the creative team recently discussed the viewer reception and whether it will influence the storyline of Pluribus.
About the Overwhelming Viewer Reception
Anyone might to get swayed by the rampant praise and fan theories regarding Pluribus. He is doing his best to steer clear of all that.
“It's like being force fed something incredibly sweet and being tickled to death,” he describes. “It's the greatest thing, but I hear about it anecdotally, and that's on purpose. Never in my life searched for my own name online, nor do I ever intend to. It's quite the opposite. It's a bottomless pit I know I would fall into and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from the hardware store and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”
In spite of Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s it's impossible to ignore the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to take it in stride and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.
“It is not our goal to tailor anything,” says writer and executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not influenced by what people are saying.”
“It's wiser to keep our heads down and working,” Gilligan concludes.
The Big Question: Will the creator Have a Plan for the Finale of Pluribus?
So if the creative staff aren't taking cues by audience theories, can we assume they already know how Pluribus will finally conclude? The answer is yes… in a way.
“There are some compelling concepts about how the story could conclude,” Gilligan reveals. “however, we remain prepared to abandon a good idea for a superior concept. That has held us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we find a more perfect path and I suspect we'll be doing that.”
Then again, if plans fall through, Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to fall back on.
“I keep pitching that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and that's where they've been all along,” he says humorously, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”
Of course, one could always use the classics?
“I'd love for Carol to open her eyes beside Bob Newhart,” Gilligan says with a smile.
