The ethical foundation of any advanced culture is to stop the more powerful from attacking and exploiting the vulnerable. Failing that, we would be permanently immersed in a state of nature where might makes right could survive.

Whenever entities that are richer and more powerful prey upon those that are not, the framework of society unravels. If these actions are not contained, the system fails. If not stopped, the world can fall into chaos and war. It has happened before.
Our current reality is a international landscape marked by extreme inequality. Authority and resources are held by fewer hands than in modern history. This creates conditions for the powerful to leverage their position against the less fortunate because they feel above the law.
The fortunes of certain tycoons is staggering. The reach of global industrial giants spans numerous countries. AI is could centralize economic and political clout further. The destructive power of the leading countries is unprecedented in the annals of time.
Supported by complicit legislators and an accommodating supreme court, the highest office has been made into the most powerful and unaccountable entity of the state in recent memory.
Put it all together and you see the danger.
A clear connection links earlier breaches of norms to present-day menaces. These were based on the hubris of omnipotence.
There is parallel dynamics in international affairs: in territorial invasions, in strategic threats, and in the rampant monopolization by massive conglomerates.
However, unfettered might does not make right. It makes for fragility, upended order, and armed conflict.
The lessons of the past reveal that frameworks designed to limit the powerful also shield them. Absent these limits, their insatiable demands for greater influence and riches ultimately cause their collapse – along with their corporations, nations, or empires. And threaten world war.
Such contempt for legal order will cast a long shadow over the nation and the world – and the very idea of civilized conduct – for years to come.
