The Porcine Pardon: Pig Named 6-7 Granted Clemency by Miami-Dade Leader.
Although not quite at the same level as sparing holiday birds, but the county's top official experienced a presidential-style act this week by ritually sparing the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the core of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“This animal is guiltless. Clemency is justified for her. Her criminal record is spotless,” Levine Cava said in a speech with obvious nods to the sheer volume of pardons issued since the beginning of a new presidential term.
“Except perhaps for eating half a dozen apples per day,” Levine Cava continued. “I hope she experiences a lengthy and joyful existence free from concern.”
This ceremony, which both honors and questions the local cultural practice of feasting on pork during the holidays, was created to emulate the annual turkey pardoning at the White House.
The swine, donated by a first responder, was given its name from the current slang trend of young people shouting “6-7” – originating from a musical verse – often seemingly at random. The craze became so pervasive that a prominent word reference recently made “6-7” its top term for the year.
A Future Secured
This particular pig is now scheduled to spend its days at a rural sanctuary “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the organizers' announcement.
“The annual pig pardon has become a beloved tradition to open the festive period,” said the event host, in a particularly upbeat message.
“It captures the essence of Miami: vibrant, diverse, and grounded in customs that foster togetherness. Each year, we are delighted to mark tradition and kindness in a way only Miami can.”
Attendees enjoyed a meat-free selection of spinach croquetas and strong coffee as they marked Six Seven’s big moment.
